On the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5th, AICM organized the first media workshop of the year, which focused on "The Story of Plastics" and provided in-depth insights into innovation and sustainable development in the plastic industry. The International Association of Chemical Manufacturers (AICM) currently represents more than 50 multinational chemical enterprises with significant investments in China, with member businesses covering various links such as chemical manufacturing, transportation, distribution, and processing. This event received support from six member companies, including Saudi Basic Industries, Costron, DSM, Langsheng, Kemira, and Keshibo. Qiu Weihui, Vice President of Covestro's Polycarbonate Business Department in Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong, introduced the application scope of plastics. He said: "Because of the low energy consumption, easy processing, light weight, recyclability and many other characteristics of plastics, the application scope of plastics has been expanding, especially as an ideal material for modern transportation systems." 22% of the Airbus A380 is made of carbon plastics, The fuselage of the new Boeing 787 is made of three plastic composite materials, and the lightweight nature of the plastic will help reduce fuel combustion by 20%. In terms of innovation in plastics, Zhang Zhenyu, Commercial Director of DSM Engineering Plastics Business Unit in Greater China, introduced the characteristics of new plastics, namely easy shaping, chemical resistance, high temperature resistance, and high toughness, which can even become a substitute material for metals. The vigorous development of the plastic industry is inevitably accompanied by widespread concerns about pollution issues among the public. Plastic has been widely used due to its low cost and practicality. According to relevant statistics, only plastic bags, a type of plastic product, are used by more than 200 people per year. If it is through landfill, it takes 100 to 400 years to degrade. The disposal of plastic waste has caused controversy among plastic products. Therefore, how to solve the pollution problem of plastics and make them play a positive role in the sustainable development of the environment is the biggest challenge currently faced by practitioners.
